We didn’t join the category. We invented it.
Before anyone made content for dogs, DOGTV spent years asking three questions: what do dogs see, how do dogs hear, and what do dogs need? The answers became a production manual, a patent family and the world’s first television network made for dogs.
- Research50+ studies from universities worldwide distilled into DOGTV’s own manual for making content that is 100% dog-customized.
- April 2010First patent application filed: a system and method for treating pets with video and audio content designed for them.
- 2012DOGTV launches as the world’s first television network for dogs.
- Proven at TuftsA 38-dog home-alone study led by Prof. Dodman shows dogs choose to watch content designed for them.
- 2023Sixth U.S. patent granted (US 11,540,489 B2).
- TodayStreaming 24/7 on connected TV, mobile, FAST channels and YouTube, with 265+ hours of dog programming in the library.
Every frame and every note, designed for dogs.
Regular TV is made for human eyes and ears. DOGTV re-engineers color, motion, camera angle, sound and music around canine senses, so dogs can actually see it, hear it and respond to it.
Graded in blue & yellow
Dogs are dichromats. Their color vision peaks in blue and yellow, and reds and greens fade to dull browns and grays. DOGTV builds every picture around the colors dogs see best.
- Blue (~430 nm) & yellow (~550 nm) emphasized
- Reds & greens reduced
- Brightness & contrast tuned for canine eyes
Shot from a dog’s eye level
Dogs react mainly to movement and to other animals. DOGTV films at dog height and from a dog’s point of view, with smooth, flicker-free motion that holds a dog’s attention.
- Low, dog’s-eye camera angles & dog POV
- Reduced flicker for canine vision
- Real dogs, animals & natural movement
Composed for canine ears
Original music and soundscapes at the frequencies, tempos and volumes that calm or engage dogs, plus real-world sounds introduced gently for habituation.
- Simple arrangements at 50–70 BPM to calm
- Squeaks, clickers & doorbells to engage
- Gradual, controlled volume for exposure
Human visionDog vision
Drag the slider.
On the right is a simulation of a dog’s view: two color channels instead of three, and softer focus. The red slide and the green lawn almost disappear. That’s what most TV looks like to a dog.
DOGTV works the other way around. We grade footage into the blues and yellows dogs see vividly, so the picture stays bright, high-contrast and readable to the viewer it was made for.
Regular TV vs. DOGTV
| Regular TV | DOGTV | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Full human spectrum. Reds and greens look muddy to a dog. | Graded toward blue & yellow, the colors dogs see best |
| Camera | Human eye level | Dog’s eye level and dog point-of-view shots |
| Motion | Fast cuts and flicker built for human vision | Smooth, flicker-free motion and dissolves |
| Sound | Dialogue, sirens, sudden noises | Original music & soundscapes for canine hearing |
| Volume | Unpredictable spikes | Controlled levels, gradual for habituation |
| Purpose | Entertain people | Relax, stimulate or desensitize dogs, on demand |
| Language | Needs dubbing or subtitles | No dialogue, so it works in every territory |
50+ studies. One manual for making TV for dogs.
DOGTV’s content rules come straight from peer-reviewed science on canine vision, hearing and behavior. A few of the findings we build on:
The behaviour of kennelled dogs is influenced by visual stimulation in the form of television programmes.Graham & Wells, 2005Queen’s University Belfast
70% of anxiety behaviors were reduced with solo piano, simplified arrangements at 50–70 bpm.Leeds & SpectorBioacoustic Research & Development
Exposure to features of the environment before 8 weeks might reduce subsequent fear and anxiety.Pluijmakers & ApplebyUniversity of Bristol
Video sequences can be a useful tool in the study of how visual stimuli affect many aspects of animal behaviour.D’Eath, 1997University of Oxford
The behavior of sheltered dogs is influenced by the type of auditory stimulation to which the animals are exposed.Wells, 2002Queen’s University Belfast
Dogs do look at images.Somppi et al.Eye-tracking in canine cognition research, University of Helsinki
Dogs chose DOGTV.
Prof. Nicholas Dodman’s team at Tufts filmed dogs home alone in Los Angeles and New York apartments, comparing DOGTV with CNN, Animal Planet and no TV at all.
“The dogs clearly showed an interest in watching a television channel for dogs… DOGTV is a valuable enrichment tool for dogs left home alone. This is a ground-breaking first step toward addressing the issue of canine separation anxiety.”
The science is patented.
DOGTV’s method for creating and delivering video and audio adapted to pets is protected by a family of six U.S. patents, with priority going back to April 2010.
